A Kundalini awakening can happen naturally, as an impulse from the Soul, or you can encourage it through spiritual practices like yoga, breath work, meditation, ecstatic dance, and connecting with yourself and the divine.
They can also happen after trauma—emotional, like betrayal or deception, or physical, like an accident or loss. This is extra energy to help you through.
The awakening is meant to be a positive experience, connected to spiritual growth, transformation, and transcendence. That said, it can feel unnerving at times if you’re confused about what’s happening. Staying grounded is key, and lots, lots of self-care and self-love will carry you through. There’s a list of symptoms at the bottom of the post.
What is Kundalini?
Kundalini is energy that normally lies coiled up, asleep, at the base of your spine.
The awakening happens when this energy rises up along your spine, usually with a curvy, warm sensation—like a snake—helping you through an energetic transformation. It raises your vibration, lifts you up, and adds more light.
Sometimes it’s a survival mechanism to help you get through a rough patch. Other times, it’s an organic spiritual growth spurt nudging you toward your next level of consciousness.
Why It Can Feel Confusing
The part that can be unnerving about a Kundalini awakening is that you might not know what’s really happening.
If you fear illness of any kind—including mental health—or feel like you need support, I always recommend seeing a doctor, therapist, support group, functional medicine specialist, or even traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. This helps you rule out physical problems and deal with them appropriately. Instead of blocking your energetic awareness, it frees your mind to understand the transformation you’re going through.
Change is happening, and it’s trying to improve your situation. Keeping your heart open and sharing love with those you trust helps calm your nervous system and supports the process.
The Purpose of Kundalini Awakening
The awakening opens your energy centers and clears your meridians so energy can flow freely without resistance. More well-being is the goal. You're tanscending the old you. Transforming on profoundly deep spiritual levels.
Your intuition will heighten, you're mediumship skills will blossom and you could achieve a more clear vision of your path forward. You could feel more sensitive as your knowing increases. Go with it, this could be very enjoyable.
You may feel pain in your body—not because the rising energy itself hurts you, but because it points out where blocks exist in your physical body, energy centers, chakras, or meridians.
Everything is energy. When you get to the core of an energetic block, your body often responds with partial or complete healing on its own. Your body is amazing—it can usually heal itself with a little encouragement. Energy work, clearings, and readings can help this process along.
Understanding the energetic roots of emotional and physical problems is powerful because that’s where they begin. Feeling your feelings and being willing to release them can bring you back into alignment. Communicating with your body through somatic healing can lead to tremendous breakthroughs and release old trauma you didn’t even realize you were still carrying. Forgiveness helps—you don’t have to carry the pain anymore, you can let it go.
Moving away from negative influences also brings clarity and calm. It’s hard to change patterns if you keep engaging with the situations that maintain your blocks.
This is all part of your self-development, a powerful aspect of your spiritual growth. We often call these practices “The Work.” Staying with yourself through the process brings cohesion and balance.
Common Experiences During Awakening
You may notice:
Brief periods of anxiety, panic, brain fog, headaches, dry mouth, restlessness, and racing thoughts.
Your nervous system struggling as old patterns are rewired.
Hormonal shifts, physical adjustments, and changes at a cellular level.
Over time, as the energy reaches your pineal gland and crown, your system finds its balance.
Physical activity in the morning is especially helpful during transformation. It relieves emotional angst, liberates muscle tension, and clears your mind. Grounding techniques like earthing, hiking, Pilates, push-ups, or sit-ups help balance your energy.
Routines, boundaries, and knowing your limits help prevent spiraling or regrets. Self-soothing and positive self-talk remind your system that you’re changing for the better. Massage, detox baths, nourishing foods, hydration, moderate exercise, and connecting with positive community all shorten discomfort and support fresh, positive patterns.
Be good to yourself, keep surrendering to the present moment, forgive any slights, and be willing to move forward. Soon, you’ll find yourself feeling better, flowing forward, and radiating confidence and positive energy.
